What defines a burger? What if something looks like a burger and tastes like a burger but the menu doesn’t say it’s a burger? What if it’s from a bakery, not a burger restaurant? And you can’t get it with chips?
Well, that’s the case with Woodfrog Bakery’s Challah Roll with Mushrooms, Rosemary and Gruyére Cheese. Best served with coffee for breakfast or brunch. And I say that because it’s very likely they will be sold out by lunchtime. And Woodfrog Bakery is not a dinner sort of place.
But never mind all that – let’s call it a burger. And it’s one of the best burgers I have tasted. The mushrooms are flavoursome, with just the right amount of rosemary. The cheese* complements the mushrooms perfectly, without overwhelming them. And the challah roll is sweet and crunchy, and you know it’s fresh because it’s made just beyond the glass windows behind the counter.
It’s not a big burger – but there are plenty of tempting patisserie items to follow with if your appetite is not quite satisfied. Or you could just order another burger…
Coffee: Long Black / $3.50
Location: 108 Barkly Street, St Kilda, VIC
* I contacted Woodfrog Bakery to see if their Gruyére cheese contained animal rennet, but unfortunately I received no reply.
